Phase One is the raw recollection of anticipatory grief in the lead up to losing a parent and the goodbye that follows. It explores denial, uncertainty, anger and sadness. From the struggle of getting a diagnosis to the move into the local hospice, this spoken word piece explores the taboos surrounding loss and the powerful love between a mother and daughter.

I developed Phase One when I was seventeen, grieving the loss of my mum. Scribbling down my thoughts in a poetic form helped me to make sense of some the events that happened during that time.

Later on it allowed me to sit in my grief and think beyond what happened within the hospital walls, and instead focus on the treasured moments I shared with my mum and sister.

For this Benjamin Squires produced the soundtrack and Geoff Bird was my mentor. The illustration was drawn by me.
